UK Visitor Visa from Nigeria: requirements, timeline and cost (2026)
The UK Standard Visitor visa is the route for tourism, visiting family, short business trips and other stays of up to six months. For Nigerian applicants it is decided on paper — there is no interview — which means the application bundle does all the talking. This guide covers what UKVI actually looks for, what it costs, how long it takes, and where applications from Nigeria most often go wrong.
What the officer is really deciding
Every visitor application answers one question: will this person leave the UK when their visit ends? Everything in your bundle either supports that answer or undermines it. The officer weighs your ties to Nigeria (work, business, property, family, responsibilities) against the pull of the UK, and checks that the visit's purpose and funding are credible.
The core requirements
- A valid passport with at least one blank page.
- Purpose of visit — clearly stated and consistent across your form, your statement and your host's documents.
- Financial evidence — your own funds, a sponsor's, or a combination. Bank statements should tell a stable story; sudden large deposits raise questions rather than settle them.
- Ties to Nigeria — employment letters, business registration (CAC), property documents, evidence of family responsibilities.
- Host details (if staying with family or friends) — their immigration status, accommodation and, where they sponsor you, their income evidence.
Cost and timeline
The government fee for a 6-month Standard Visitor visa is around £127 (confirm the current fee on gov.uk when you apply, as fees change). Standard processing runs about 3 weeks from your biometrics appointment; priority (≈5 working days) and super-priority services cost more. Add time for gathering documents and booking biometrics at VFS Global (Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt) — realistically, start 6–8 weeks before travel.
Where Nigerian applications most often fail
- Thin ties to Nigeria. The single biggest refusal ground. A letter saying you have a job is weak; an employment letter plus payslips plus approved leave for the exact travel dates is strong.
- Financial evidence that raises questions. Unexplained lump-sum deposits shortly before applying read as window-dressing.
- Inconsistencies. Dates, names and figures that don't match between the form, statements and evidence.
- Ignoring a previous refusal. Reapplying with the same bundle that was refused invites the same outcome. The refusal notice tells you exactly what to fix — use it.
How we approach it
We build every application case-by-case: an honest assessment first, then the evidence bundle designed around your actual circumstances — and where a case carries refusal-risk, our Case Strengthening service builds the supporting documentation that answers the officer's doubts before they're raised.
